Work & Research Experience

09/2017-Present

Senior (level-3) Teaching Assistant

09/2019 - Present

Computational Chemist

Instructed by Dr. Kenneth M. Merz Jr.

  • Published five articles (four first author, one under review) on JCTC and JCIM, top-tier journals in computational chemistry.

  • Went through painful yet fruitful transition from experimentalist to theorist by team working with cut-edge researchers and self learning on programming languages and simulation packages.

  • Learned how to operate AMBER package to conduct complex simulations and free energy calculations, like thermodynamic integrations and potential of mean force, even on membranes protein systems.

  • Did software engineering on the AMBER source code to implement pairwise chemical potential between atoms.

  • Provided important parameters on metal ions for the simulation community.

09/2017 - 05/2019

Experimental Biologist

Instructed by Dr. Heedeok Hong

  • Published one article about membrane protein homeostasis

  • Conducted E.coli culture (BL21, DH5α), PCR, primer design, membrane protein expression and purification using Nickel affinity column and size exclusion liquid chromatography.

  • Conducted protein activity assay using casein as substrate.

05/2015 - 07/2017

Bacteriologist

Instructed by Dr. Jing Zhao

  • Published one article on Science Advances (IF=15) about hydrogen biocatalysts using in E.coli surface display.

  • Conducted anaerobic bacterial culture.

  • Used Bio-Brick technique to construct a plasmid with seven pieces of artificially designed hydrogenase sequences.

  • Conducted gas chromatography on measuring hydrogen production.

Instructed by Dr. Joseph Ward, Dr. Remi Beaulac, Dr. Johanna Herman and Dr. Mengqi Zhang

  • Taught CEM161, CEM162, CEM255 in the Chemistry Department of Michigan State University.

  • Obtained Teaching Merit Award in 2018.

  • Lead more than 400 students in completing more than 20 chemistry projects, varying from kinetic clock reaction to acetanilide synthesis.

  • Many students were later admitted by famous programs including the Medicine Program at St. George's University and the Veterinary Medicine Program at Michigan State University.

Awards & Expertise & Skills

  • 2018 Education Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching, Michigan State University.

  • 2015 Best Project Award in Environment, iGEM, Boston, MA.

  • Skillful in AMBER, Gaussian, VMD, Chimera.

  • Skillful in Fortran, C/C++, Python.

  • Skillful in plasmid extraction, PCR, enzyme kinetic assays.

  • More personal hobbies include linguistics, kayaking, guitar, basketball & powerlifting. Please check the certificate & others tab for more information.
